Background of the Study
Women have historically played a central role in peacebuilding efforts, yet their participation in formal peace processes, especially in conflict zones, remains marginalized. Gwoza, located in Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, has been significantly affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, which has devastated the region and displaced large numbers of people. In this context, women, particularly those who have been directly impacted by the conflict, have emerged as critical actors in grassroots peacebuilding and conflict resolution initiatives (Olorunfemi & Bello, 2023).
In Gwoza, women have been involved in efforts to mediate between conflicting groups, provide support to displaced persons, and rebuild social ties fractured by violence. These women have contributed to restoring hope and stability, even though they often face cultural and societal barriers to their involvement in formal peace processes. While there is a growing recognition of women’s roles in peacebuilding, challenges such as limited access to education, political exclusion, and gender-based violence continue to impede their full participation.
This study aims to assess the role of women in peacebuilding in Gwoza LGA, exploring the challenges they face, the strategies they employ, and the impact of their involvement on community peace and resilience.
Statement of the Problem
Women in Gwoza have played an essential role in peacebuilding and post-conflict recovery; however, their participation is often hindered by deep-rooted cultural, social, and political constraints. Despite their contributions, women continue to be excluded from formal peacebuilding processes and decision-making platforms, which limits their potential to influence lasting peace and security in the region. The problem this study addresses is the underrepresentation of women in peacebuilding initiatives and the need for strategies to enhance their involvement in peace processes in Gwoza.
